Well, I've seen pictures of bikes with those on the top tube. They appear to have fallen out of fashion by the '60s or so... I would expect they work with the AW and such.

I wouldn't mind having one to put on a future project, though. I have this urge to build a drop-bar 3-speed someday (for which an old Super Course is the likely subject).
