Subject: [CR]Drivetrain weights and Sampson Stratics Crank

Good moring CR folks. Two questions this morning.

1st question: Has anyone done any weight comparisons of different drive train set ups? My particular question, as I work on the Raleigh, is the potential weight penalty of putting a racing triple on it. My normal, knee jerk prejudice is that the triple will increase weight, but on further reflection I'm not sure. A racing triple would permit a smaller freewheel (13-22 six speed, versus 13-28 seven speed) and a shorter chain, which might perhaps offset the extra chainring and longer BB spindle of the triple. This might be especially true considering the third chainring is aluminum and the chain and freewheel cogs are steel. Anyone ever weighed these parts? (Yes I could do it myself if I wanted to acquire surplus freewheels and consume two chains, but whats the use of having a omniscient list if I don't use it?)

2nd question: Another impulse buy: a Sampson Stratics crankset is coming my way. Does anyone have any road experience with these? In particular, what type and length of bottom bracket do they take? When were they made, how many were produced, and did they have any particular idiosycracies (that is, do I dare ride it or will it kill me)?

Thanks again listies.
