To all CR's:
I once had a nice Benotto (Mexico) lugged steel frameset "powder coated". I recommend against powdercoating, and prefer regular bicycle paint instead. The problem with electrostatic powdercoating is that it does not adhere well to the edges of the lugs; rust started to rather quickly form on the Benotto. I was warned of this in advance by a Italian bicycling friend of mine, who did great bodywork on cars. I didn't believe him, and found out the hard way that he was right!
(I was a know-it-all at 24. I listen more carefully now.)
For featureless welded aluminum frames, powdercoating is OK.

Thanks for all the advice on my new (old!) Trek frame. The serial number is 14B9D65. The numbers supplied by the list don't seem to have any rhyme or reason.
Upon consideration, I'm going to keep the frame and fork together, although it might be a while before it gets repainted. A couple more questions for the list.
Any pros and cons on Powdercoating? While not "authentic", it's more cost effective and gives a tough finish. But are there hidden negative factors? Is it possible to get any paint effects such as metallic or flamboyant?
I'm missing the headbadge, and it was riveted on. Anyone know of a source for a spare?
I'm thinking of setting up the frame as a fixed gear. Is there an article out there that gives equipment specs such as BB spindle length changes vs. a double crank, crank arm length, converting a road double to a single, pedal recommendations, etc etc.?
