Right-angle cranks and other variants have been promoted frequently as "revolutionary," often with some pseudo-scientific blather. My personal opinion is that they are about as practical as tractor seats with six-inch foam pads. Sometime in the 70s-80s, there were some BMX cranksets that had a neat S-curve--pretty, but all they did was add weight.

On a crank-related subject, early Santanas came with stoker cranks mounted 90 degrees out of phase with the captain's cranks. I haven't seen that lately: is it still common practice, or are most of them in-phase? I was convinced that the out-of-phase was a good idea by watching a couple on a tandem win a hillclimb event at the Great Western Bike Rally back in '74 or so, beating all the wiry little climbers.
