I first saw this crank on a Univega Alpina. It was the first sub $500 mountain bike IIRC. I test rode one in the parking lot and dumped it right in front of the salesman. (I think the stem was loose.) He tried to make me buy it on the spot, because it was now scratched. I wouldn't, and he swore at me, and I never went back to that shop.

I've only done about a mile on a mountain bike since then, and that was to return the baby sitter's bike after fixing it. I usually use a touring bike for dirt roads, but lately have been using a BSA fixed gear with 28mm tubulars. It's a blast on muddy single-track, although there was one undignified moment when at speed I came upon a bridge made out of a box pallet and tried to coast...
