Sorry OT. . . I guess you haven't seen the Rolhoff Speed hub http://www.rohloff.de/english/products/speedhub/ 14-speeds with a really wide (526%) range and doesn't weight any more then the parts it replaces. If I had the money they would be on all my bikes. Sachs also made a 12-speed but it was really a bowling ball. I think the reasons in the past are then 5 speed internals covered close to the same gear range a basic 10 speed did.
