I do not know of any famous builders/shops who used those beefy stays routinely. I first saw them in the mid 1970s being used by Mike Melton' in his frame shop in South Carolina, before he moved to Ohio to do the Tandem specialty thing and then later land the job with the Huffy Special Development shop.
Mike had been introduced to frame building in Japan at 3Rensho when he was in the Navy in the beginning of the 1970s. Interesting to note that 3Rensho used Ishiwata too. Seems like I remember a little Elephant pictured in their tubing sticker?
McLean Fonvielle of Silk Hope/McLean had a batch too. I have some pairs left and have used them on a couple of road frames... usually for big persons! Jimmy Murray, the owner of Revi Cyclewear has a DB using those chain stays. He is not that big (second owner) and that frame is a little over-the-top for him as it is stiff as a brick!
