Grant Peterson is right on the money regarding the quality of the bikes. I've been lucky to go to a couple of Track World Cups recently, and the Japanese have the coolest bikes. Once they are unfettered by NJS regulations, the Japanese riders will festoon their keirin bikes with all the latest widgets, so its normal to see lugged steel frames with carbon four spoke front wheels & Campagnolo Ghibli rear discs.

There is a good example of a keirin frame on Makino's website http://www.cc.rim.or.jp/~mackino/top.html
