If the person had confronted you on the street, shown a knife.. AND THRUST IT AT YOU.. but you evaded the thrust...
Would you
1. Attempt to catch and detain the criminal with the help of the local police force.. then pressing charges for assault with a deadly weapon? OR
2. Figure that it would cause trouble, be hard to prove, or otherwise be a hassle to prosecute?
