It occurred to me that the reason above bottom bracket cable routing lingered on top of the line models was the Nuovo Record Derailleur. The cable enters from the top more than the rear and would seem to require a more severe bend in the housing if it came from underneath the chainstay. see: http://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/richard_sachs2/rs2.jpg Running along the top of the stay it's a simple turn down and into the derailleur. Later parallelogram style derailleurs seem to mostly enter from the rear.
