Subject: [CR]Question about Hearse & others forging their own parts

How did Hearse & other constructeurs manage to forge the parts for their bikes? When I think of forging I think of large heavy machines using very strong dies to smash blocks of metal into shape which typically makes economic sense only if you're making large quantities. Considering Hearse didn't make hundreds of bikes needing these parts and that he probably used many different sized stems and cranks it would seem that this would be awfully expensive undertaking. Am I way out in left field (or in cycling parlance, way of the back) on this?
