Lou is right on the money. I got some recently at Home Depot to put on my son's bike. They were on the ends of nail-on plastic sliders for wooden chair legs. I bought a package of four, took the plastic protectors off, and put them on the bike's cable ends. I tossed the chair sliders into a drawer in the basement. Someday I'll get around to needing those, too.

Smaller, older hardware stores that have hundreds of those little hardware bins are worth exploring. That's where I found a stash of little blue rubber booties that were an exact match for the ones found on Campy metal pump heads. I bought some red ones, too, for my red and black bike.
