Hedddarr,

Yup, you're right on the money with that.

At 6'4" and 245, I'm not anybody's idea of a greyhound, but nobody calls me fat, either..

This summer I took a ride from Ft Myers, Fla., to Windsor, Canada on my 64cm Atlantis, which I normally use for riding out and around the countryside where I live in Germany.

Although I use 700c Alesa Sputniks with 40mm Schwalbes rolling on 36 hole Suntour XC Pro GG hubs, they are still round and true, not because the German farm trails are so smooth, but rather, because I don't pound them.

I've watched a lot of very light mountain bikies blow out their wheels simply because they treat them harshly - and sit there with their jaws swinging when I ride by, on what they swear is an antique..

Still have my '78 Mercian with its' original 36 hole Campy NR high flange, 3x DT 14g (straight) spokes lace to Weinmann Concaves. I flinched back then, when I ponied up $275 for these wheels - never thinking I'd still be on them in 2002!

Finesse vs. fury, huh?

>snip
>(The other narrow clincher rim of the day was the Rigida >1320, but they were real dogs.)

I purchased a pair of rigida 27" 1319's from Nashbar in 1977. They gave me great service in the pot hole capitol of the world Erie PA. Put a lot of miles on them.

This brings up a little side issue . . . any rim can be destroyed by the lightest of riders. Riding style must be accounted for in assesing the value of a rim.

I threw shot put in high school and weighed 205 plus or minus lunch. I used 1 1/8" tires with 10# more in the front and 20# more in the rear than the rated preasure. I still have them as rims. I retired them in 1982 when I got the urge to try sew ups. So I got new spokes and Arc en Ciel (sp) rims. Kept them and will build them again when I find the perfect frame for pre index dura ace.

I read the bike boom books and learned to "ankle" Does any body do that anymore?????

Also learned to hop pot holes and RR tracks.

PS I don't think even Lance could bunny hop the 12 and 18th street tracks in Erie. I would take the greatest 10 mile detours to avoid those.
