That's why chromed tubes on bikes are often clear coated. (Think of those old PX-10s where the clear coat has yellowed...compared to an uncoated Italian chrome fork, the kind that rusts/pits by looking at it on a humid day.)

Also, I know a couple Harley buddies who get parts chromed. Some of the platers in the motorcycle business are as obsessive/artistic as bicycle frame builders/painters. And they've got better tattoos.
