Good question. When I look at all the brakesets in my parts
box I notice that the less expensive sets are like these - with
the cables attached to the right, as you face the caliper. The
expensive brakes are the reverse. Mid-priced brakes such as
these can go either way!
When you're using the old style, non-aero levers it really
matters very little as you can get smooth cable routing either
way. Now as for why this situation exists...
I don't know either. Perhaps because the less expensive
sets are of an older design and follow an older standard,
whereas the more expensive ones were originally copies of the
Campy side pulls. As for why Campy felt compelled to change
what strikes me as a "standard"... perhaps they just wanted
to differentiate themselves from Universal?
But as they always said to me in Italy, "Quasi lo stesso -
they're almost the same".
