One thing that definately changed was going from an aluminium crown "race" to a steel one.
My circa 1979 headset has more than 60K miles on it. I shelled out the long dollar at the time to have an all sealed bearing bike.
Not only were the headsets expensive, but there was quite a backlog of orders in the early days.
