French is 35X1 which gives a 35mm diameter and a thread pitch of 1 MM,the actual thread is 1MM, fractional (US or BRIT) gives the threads per inch.
                 "everything is going to be much easier when we go to the metric system" someone told me that many years ago,unfortunately they did not say WHICH metric system.
