Fessing up is usually hard only after the fact. If you tell your spouse about the intended purchase before it is made, you're probably OK. If she objects, (perhaps wisely so) and you buy the toy anyway you are in big trouble. If she "discovers" the toy while looking for something else; it looks as if you are hiding something. (Probably true). This came up way back when a list member was wondering how to get his new bike from it's hiding place in the van to it's new home without having to explain himself. I think that some of us are reluctant to bring up subjects with our spouses if the outcome is uncertain. We don't want to defend our decision. My first wife was really wicked in these discussions. My second wife is pretty good about it; she simply believes that I have too many hobbies. One should be enough. Now if I don't tell her soon about the '52 Claud Butler and the "other bike" I will be squirming too.
