Subject: [CR]Pedals and Shoes

I too ventured off into the world of clipless pedals and shoes for a time. I even gave away my perfectly good old cleated leather shoes that I didn't think I'd ever wear again and didn't think anyone else would want either. But I have switched all but one of my bikes back to "normal" pedals. I only use the clipless pedals/shoes when I want to go out in the hills and do some serious climbing. This is the only place where I feel any benefit of the newer design. And the "normal" pedals will do almost as well except I think that over the years, I've gotten lazy and accustomed to riding around with my toeclips and straps too loose. Especially in the city traffic which is where I do most of my riding. I remeber way back when we would cinch up the straps nice and snug and go out in the countryside and hills and do some serious riding. Then when we got back into town, we'd reach down and flick the buckle to loosen the strap just enough so that we could get out of the pedals quickly if needed. I am now buying up good old pedals and probably have more than I'll ever need but I can't pass up a good pair when I see them, especially if they're atractively priced, which most of them are now. I also keep old pedals around just for the parts since replacement cups and cones and dust caps are impossible to find for pedals. The dilema I face nowdays is finding the traditional style shoes in my size. I've gone so far as to think of modifying some bowling shoes, or having a shoe maker make me a custom pair of black leather shoes with laces etc... I keep looking on eBay and at the flea markets etc. If anyone knows of some sources of NOS cleated shoes, please post them for us. Thanks, Bruce Schrader San Francisco, CA
