My poor shattered nerves --------------- I'm lucky in many respects, and one of the nice things about being in the Washington DC area is that there is a long tradition of good bikes. From be-spoke frames (Proteus, imports) to classy equipment, we do see it. Which means that we do get some "bargains" sometimes. Here are a few examples:
--> All campy-but-brakes Stella that I sold to a list member for about the price we see asked for a really clean NR derailleur. looked like it had been outside for decades, although all the nuts and bolts unthreaded cleanly.
--> Almost top of the line or absolute best Gitane frameset, with most parts except wheels, $20 -- guy who sold it to me found it in the garbage. Not a pretty sight, and really tiny. Probably too small for Brian Bayliss. --> Nice tracker, with slightly rusty Magistroni cranks and FB hubs, $100. Ain't no looker. Full surface rust, poor decals, but a hoot to ride. --> Motobecane Grand Jubilee, very tired, gift. Such goodies as a 170 mm crank paired with a 175, with chainrings almost gone after 16,000 mi, apparently with the same chain!
In my experience, things here usually sell pretty close to their value. sure, I've gotten a bargain or two, such as a Medici touring I'd like to sell eventually, but it's the exception.
Mostly, the "bargain" horses are long in the tooth. Or whatever.
Of course, Marty Walsh finds the real bargains around here.
