One experience I had was with French threaded Lyotard 45Ds in an English Stronglight 93. These came stock on my 1973 LeJeune and I rode them for a couple of years without knowing. Only when I removed the pedals to upgrade to something else did I discover they were French threaded. Evidently, the shop had tightened them really well. No damage to the cranks. I think it just depends on how much and in what direction the crank and pedals depart from the nominal thread diameter. Some combinations work OK, some would probably ruin the cranks.
