Subject: [CR]Gun blue?

Prior to WW1 the finest blue finished weapons were done in what was called "vapor blue", normally done in a wooden box, somewhat time consuming and therefore expensive. The difference between a hot blue finish, done in a vat and a vapor blue are like night and day.

I think with some research you could recreate the vapor blue system at home. I reproduced some P08 parts for a fellow and he vapor blued them, they looked original.

Since we are on the topic, our ancestors used to "brown" rifles and other steel tools, another rusting system, but some beautiful finishes were achieved. But with all rust finishes you have to care for them, a light coat of oil at all times!
