Another couple of data points:

1963: Schwinn Paramount $200 with lovely Stronglight forged steel cottered cranks; extra $25 for Campy. 1968 or so: PX-10 in Providence I think was $165 (certainly << $200), and I thought that terribly high for a bike w/o any campy parts. 1970: If memory serves, the Raleigh International was $220 (I bought a year-old model from the original buyer, for $140, but my grad student "income" was a bout $2400/yr). International was all-campy-but-brakes...

My Dad paid $250 (tax included) for a Peugeot PX-10 in 1974, and I paid $220 for the same bike in 1972. When I bought mine, the only other bike I could find with a full 531DB frame that was as cheap was a Mercian... everything else was higher.
