Repairing tubulars...what memories. If you had just glued on a brand new set of aged, silk,Clement PR's and wanted to eat the next week (the ;plight of a young racer/student) than you had to patch them. I learned a trick from an old (six day) racer. I used a very small knitting needle and some very nice waxed cotton thread. I tried using the same thing Fred Radnor was mentioning, I just found the knitting needle faster and I could get more even tension on the thread. My rule was never put it back on the bike for a race wheel, but you could use it for training or a spare. Along the same lines, you had to learn how to fold the tire into a little ball that fit under the seat with a toe strap or be ridiculed. i found I could do a tire in about thirty minutes, less if i did several at a time then patched, stitched, then reglued the base tape.
