I've never really understood that debate. All this stuff was manufactured with the intent of being ridden. And for the most part, anything no longer current is cheap to acquire. And again for the most part, none of this stuff is hurt by being used for its intended purpose.
I think the most common reasons I've heard for not riding something (and it baffles me) are the ones that go, "What if I crash it?" and "I'll wear it out!"
My point: Acquire a newer but still on topic bike that functions more to your liking instead of "upgrading" parts on an originally equipped bike. Maybe the analogy would be to mount a Gran Sport derailleur on a Cambio Corsa equipped bike because the Gran Sport shifted better. Perfectly understandable back in the day, but if done today, the bike would be in the hands of an unappreciative owner.
