This is not really in the realm of hot rodding; more a set up thing. I always found it useful to leave the cable very loose. In field sprints you often wanted to shift into the smallest cog when you were bearing down on the finish and pressing pretty hard on the pedals. Sometimes the gear was reluctant to shift. Leaving the cable loose solved that problem. It doesn't take anything like the whole 180 degrees of lever travel to cover the freewheel so there is no down side. Anybody else use this trick?

Jamie Swan -Who happily used his STI shifter to shift gears 20 meters from the line and won the field sprint (one guy was away) in the "C" category of the local training race last Friday night - Northport, N.Y.
