Another option for the Flying Scott might be to get a Shimano hyperglide (contact Sheldon Brown if not available in your area)with the great big 34 tooth bailout gear if available for your hub.. I did and it gets my unfit 52 year old legs almost there even with a Campagnolo SR 53/42 in the front. It is very inexpensive and is durable-just not period correct. I don't know the capacity of your rear derailler but if insufficient, there are still mods.

Laying bare my ignorance of Campagnolo, what is the smallest chainring that will fit an old style (early 80s?)Pista chainset and would anyone want to swap one for a 52-tooth ring?

Also, I have a 1961/62 Flying Scot with front and rear Gran Sport derailleurs, a Stronglight 49D chainset with 48/52 chainrings and a 14-24 five-speed block. I hope to swap the chainrings for something like 36/48. Will the front derailleur be able to handle that? What would be the smallest inner ring that the front mech would be capable of handling?

Unfit, 42-year-old legs eagerly await your answers...
