Steve Barner actually brought up the pulling spoke orientation as a myth. I just cited to Jobst's book and said why I thought it was silly.

At the place I cited in the book (p. 74) Jobst does not say the effect is small and simply says "To improve rear derailleur clearance rear wheels should be spoked mirror-image with the pulling spokes coming from between the flanges." With reference to "Jobst is pretty clear on this", maybe he has been questioned on this elsewhere and backpedaled? If he wanted to clear it up where he wrote it he could of- I'm looking at a second edition.

Also as I said, if you let up pedaling the spokes move back and hit the derailleur. So the idea is just wrong in terms of a benefit.

The point was to find an example of Jobst being silly on the particular issue Steve was talking about- pulling spokes from the inside or outside.
