Odd thing, it looks like some of the old bikes were not the top models of the era, but lesser ones. Probably the modern pros don't know the diffference.

SPORT, the most recent issue has a great Retro Bikes feature. In the spirit
of looking back over the last year celebrating the 100th anniversary of the
TdF, the editors had 4 current French cycling Pros take 4 various retro
racing bikes out for a test ride (from 4 separate decades I believe) and
record their impressions. It's quite fascinating and a bit humorous to see
these guys (Laurent Brochard, Sylvian Chavenel, etc) fully decked out in
modern team kit riding a 50 year old Automoto or 60's era Mercier. Very
cool.
