There is always a difference of one sort or another. Sometimes it is a matter of the thread form only. Parts like headsets and freewheels more or less interchange. Other parts like bottom brackets are a totally different diameter.

Buy a used Sutherland's Handbook For Bicycle Mechanics, preferably the 3rd edition for our hobby because it came out in 1980. It's all in there.
