That's a great quote from *Martin Eden*. I've never read it (shame on me!), but I know of it, and cover a Tom Waits' tune ("Shiver Me Timbers") which alludes to it.

I've read that *Martin Eden* was pretty much an autobiographical novel. Do you--or anyone else--know if Jack London rode or raced? I'm curious now. . . .

If there's more cycling in *Martin Eden*, I guess it will have to go on my reading list!
