Yes. I have two friends, both very accomplished cyclists who had such accidents within the past seven years. One broke both arms when his mudguard was crumpled by road debris. The other broke his nose, destroyed his helmet and a very stout touring fork, and got a face full of road rash when he rode over a six-inch stick in a storm and it became lodged in the mudguard. We all now use the SKS fitments, even with Bluemel's on old bikes, and I have found on three occasions that they work as advertised.
