So what do you call what most of us refer to as a "cottered crank?"

I agree about not calling cotters "cotter pins."

Much of this issue derives from the split between British and American "English" which occurred before the industrial revolution, so many technical terms (and virtually every part of an automobile) differ depending on which side of The Pond you're speaking from.

Since cottered cranks were never popular in the Americas, we never developed a specific term for them. What an American mechanic calls a "cotter pin" is known in Britain as a "split pin" so they don't have that confusion.
