Hi Rod, Yes canti posts vary in diameter very, very slightly, and the ID of canti brakes vary even more. When I have run into this problem in the past, I have sanded the posts down with emery cloth until the desired fit is attained. Usually the Japanese brakes fit looser than American or European ones. The first thing to check is the top edge of the post for mushrooming. The end of the post sometimes gets mushroomed slightly larger from over tightening the brake bolt. If it is not mushroomed, sand down the post until you get a nice fit. I would stick with the dia-compes myself and save the Mafacs for another more appropriate bike. The post should be parallel to the wheel, if it isn't that could be why you can't get them toed in. I hope this helps, Chris Ioakimedes Fairfax California

Hiya folks, I have a few cantilever questions.

Do the posts for cantilever brakes vary in size? I tried to put Mafacs on my Trek 720 and they don't seem to fit on the posts. It currently has Dia Compe brakes on it.

Also, I can't seem to get the toe in adjusted right on one of the front brakes, even with the spherical washer adjuster thing tweaked all the way to one side. Does this sound like a cockeyed post, a bad brake or just a bad (me) mechanic?

Would some other canti brake like a Pauls have more adjustment than the Dia Compes for toe in?

Thanks,
