Keesh and I had the same birthdate, june 27as the Captain had a big influence on Schwinn branding for me. It was a dream come true to finally get a '60 Varsity, $66.95 in the East.

I was fortunate to have seen the first Captain show just before heading out on my 24" Bauer for school, and years later saw Clarabell's last appearance on Howdy Doody, but I don't think that was Keesh as Clarabell, but i do remember it was a saturday in March, the 11th, and that makes it 1961. It was also the only time Clarabell spoke "g-bye kids" and dissolved to the outro.

Schwinn had fair trade pricing, which today might get mixed up with price fixing, and the West was $3 more and the East $2 more, on average.

And remember, kids... Schwinn bikes are the best! - Captain Kangaroo

RIP Bob Keeshan 1927-2004

Bob Keeshan, who appeared on television as "Captain Kangaroo," said he and Rogers often spoke of how children's programming had become increasingly violent.

"I don't think it's any secret that Fred and I were not very happy with the way children's television had gone," Keeshan said.
