At first I thought you had a sharp eye, Lou, as there actually is a gusset that runs from the bottom of the HT/DT joint and extends down towards the shifter bosses about 3" but after looking at the photo, you can't see it. I think you're just seeing the paint panel. Since the frame is built out of Columbus MAX tubing, which is shaped (bi-axially ovalized) it looks a bit different dressed in lugs than a round tube bike.
