Perhaps handling? I have a water bottle mounted on the bars on my 1970 bike. Sure it is pushing the envelope, but I think it looks cool....

Anyways, I think that the bike handles differently with one (or two, as they used to do) full water bottles on the bars. It makes the bike seem less nimble, but perhaps it isn't really. Might be a mental thing.

I know that triathletes today often place their bottles on the bars. However, they are in the same TT position the whole time and don't do any turning, sprinting, or climbing.

Just an opinion...
