Subject: [CR]RE: "FIVE BICYCLES" and "The Triplets of Belleville"

SOME HAVE SUGGESTED SIMILARITIES BETWEEN MY STORY that evolved this past week or so into its latest incarnation, "FIVE BICYCLES," and the film "Triplets of Belleville." While I have seen previews of "Triplets"-- and can recall the music, the three old ladies, the cyclist, the Tour de France, and a frog hopping -- I have not seen the movie. Someone asserted that I plagerized from "Triplets," which is a false assertion. However, maybe it's the froggy thing. My story grew from reminiscing to myself about my boyhood thrill of catching tadpoles in their various stages of development and the story evolved from there -- I had nary a thought of "Triplets" until a few who had seen the flick mentioned similarities. As I said above, I haven't seen "Triplets," but from my memory of the previews, the film is probably of a genre to which my "FIVE BICYCLES" is, a genre as old as, and older, than the Tour de France itself. When realism merges with nonrealism, this literary genre is called "fabulation," or "metafiction." Examples are: "FIVE BICYCLES," "Triplets," probably, Rod Serling's "Twilight Zone," and much of the work of Edgar Allan Poe, to mention just a few of thousands out there. So, to say, as one person said, that "Triplets" had me beat by a couple months," is like saying that Serling had me beat by decades, and that Poe had me beat by almost 200 years! What, exactly, is the same between "Triplets" and "FIVE BICYCLES?" Or, is it just as I suspect, a genre thing, ergo, I'm not sure of "Triplets," but my work in its latest incarnation, "FIVE BICYCLES," is a work of original metafiction.

P.S. The same goes for the incomparable, "NO BICYCLES"

P.P.S. To Lou Deeter: Put all of the above in your pipe and smoke it.

Starck, Joe
