Speaking of which, here's an update on the database of broken vintage crank arms: Total reported: 15, by nine riders (virtually all right-hand crank arms). All (!!!) were broken at or near the pedal eye - none anywhere else. Campagnolo, Stronglight, Avocet (Ofmega), and Zeus brands. Of the nine riders that broke cranks, seven have broken multiple other bike components, including chains (roller and block), saddle frames, stems, pedals, BB spindles, hub flanges, chainstays/dropouts, and freewheels. Please let me know off-list if you've ever personally broken a vintage crank arm (if you haven't done so already), and I'll keep building the database. I plan to leave all names off the final report, unless folks feel strongly that I should do otherwise. Thanks, Greg "crankmeister" Parker Ann Arbor, Michigan

Campagnolo Nuovo / Super Record Cranks ... hahahaha

Seriously ... I hear here on the list (here here I say) that the blue label AVA tubbys from the early 1970s are prone to breakage. Also, the first generation Super Record bottom bracket with the convenient to remove breakaway spindle, to go with above cranks!

Dear CR Listmembers,

I am parting up a BIKE OF DEATH. Could you please help me, with component suggestions, for the mostly deadly bicycle parts of the 1960's - 1980's ?? No idea too bad will be rejected. Here is where I've gotten so far :

Fork: Lambert Stem: AVA drilled Seatpost: Weyless Brakes: Dia Compe w/Lever Extensions Rims: Fiamme Ergal

How should I finish up this BIKE OF DEATH ?? Suggestions ??
