Lou,

I have a Columbus tube (SLX I think) 1988 Peugeot Team. You will not find very much concerning this frame. This bike is not shown in any Peugeot catalog and I think was made availabel to select dealers at the time. It is painted black with splash decals from the 1989 production year and and those decals are similar, except in color, to the 1988 Z/Peugeot Team. The 1988 team was the year prior to LeMond joining Z, when the team switched to LeMond bikes. I purchased my frame from a fellow club rider. He picked it up from the late Heinz Linke, another clubbie as well as owner of Madison Cycle, the local Peugeot dealer. My friend took the time to verify it's origin by contacting Mssrs. Leterneau and Dutil at Pro Cycle in Quebec, the importers of Peugeot. Mr. Leterneau knew the frame and stated that these bikes were Columbus tube team bikes, made in Europe and painted in Canda. They were painted and decaled in Canada to allow the bikes to be labeled 'Made in Canada'. Another unique feature that identifies these bikes as team bikes and to no other Peugeot model is that the brake cable guides are mounted on the bottom of the top tube offset about 45 degrees to the riders left side. All Peugeots that I have seen have brazed cable guides mounted on the top of the top tube. The bike has no Columbus labels, however the rear drop outs are stamped Columbus with fender eyelets. The frame had no fork, but I had one made by Joe Bringheli of Cleveland. using a Cinelli style sloping crown, Columbus tubing and socket front drop outs. The team bikes, of which I have pictures of the 1988 Z/Peugeot team, used chrome forks with cable housings routed in the fashion I described. The serial number on the underside of the downtube begins with a 9 which may indicate it was serialized in 1989.

All the best,
