The photo and quote are from the 1953 copy of "Otto Eisele's Cycling Almanac."
The complete quote is: "The last professional bicycle race run in the United States was a 3-mile tandem event at Johnson Park, New Brunswick, June 1951--won by the New Jersey combination of Jack Heid and Jackie Simes of Westwood. Their time for 3-miles was 6 minutes 1-2/5 seconds.
Four teams started, i.e. Joe DeBacco and Angelo DeBacco, brothers of Belleville N.J. finished second; George Shipman and Leonard Maffie of Long Island finished third and Clark Albey and Buster Logan of Newark came in fourth.
The winning combination, Simes & Heid, were mounted on a Schwinn Special. Simes, 1936 National A.B.L Champion, coached Jack Heid throughout his amateur career, accomplished a feat few cycling coaches have ever duplicated--winning a professional race as a partner on a tandem with his protege."
