Doug has got it in one.The Chater Lea tommy bar rat trap pedal won a CTC Plaque in I think 1947 for their novel innovation. Other notable CTC Plaque winners were Freddie Grubb for his quick release rear drop-out, although there is a lot of controversy about this particular design and it caused the eventual split between Ching Allin and Fred Grubb of Alllin & Grubb Cycles in the early 1920's. F.W. Evans also won a CTC Plaque but I can't remember what for. Hilary please help a rapidly fading memory! Mick Butler Huntingdon UK.

Doug Smith <doug@kingsweir.plus.com> wrote: Following Mike Wilkinson's reference to the tommy bar pedal and looking at the Paris picture the answer lies in the construction of the Chater Lea pedals. At the crank end next to the threading the spindle has a approx 1/4" hole drilled through for attaching or removing the pedal by means of tommy bar. This method is very useful for a removal because it does'nt slip unlike the normal pedal spanner.I do not know of any other pedal having this method I can assure its a great asset Doug.Smith North Dorset England UK
