The Dutch style transportation bicycle I made as an example of what we will make in Ukraine. There is a picture of it in my section of the Classic Rendezvous site. First a 2+ mile round trip to the bank and post office and later a 3+ mile round trip to the school board meeting. I've ridden it 137 miles this year.

The integrated lock and kickstand were useful when parking outside. The enclosed chainguard allowed me to wear long pants without worrying about grease or catching the cuff on the chain ring. The board meeting ran late so I flipped on the generator front light and blinking led rear coming home. Niles isn't hilly but I used all 7 internal gears while going over the viaduct and climbing the hill after crossing the river. I could shift at any time whether pedaling, coasting or standing still. It was a beautiful clear day so the fenders weren't called into service and the roller brakes work dry as well as wet. The rear rack wasn't necessary to carry my checks and letter so the Wald fold up basket stayed folded up.

This kind of bike is so common in Europe and so rare in the states. It makes so much sense for running errands. The question I have is America smart enough to ever use this kind of bike for shorter trips? or are we driven to buy something created by fashion and driven by marketing that sacrifices practical function for style? (ignore this question Frank Ellingford) Gas prices are rising and what will the average person choose if he wants an alternative to his car?
