Charles,

You are talking Aug.? I thought Sept.? Clearly this is a plot to kill me. I don't know why you are bothering; none of you guys ride my size bike.

I'll go. Let me see if I can find a bike with a quad crankset and a 36T granny gear. Anyone have a fresh pair of legs that are in shape for sale? I've got some low mileage trade ins!

I'm planning to go to the track tonight for the first time in 10 years to ride a little. Not going to get much practice climbing there. I suppose a few trips up MT. Helix next week are in order.

Are you sure you guys want to bring me along? I might be sucking up so much air on the way up there won't be any left for you guys.

Yeah, bring 40 lbs. of water along too!

Join an intrepid group of climbers on their vintage steeds for a ride up to Baldy Village, nestled in the Angeles National Forest, in the San Bernardino Mountains.

This informal ride is on Sunday August 14. We start at 9:00am. The Baldy Ride begins at Pioneer Park in Azusa, at the corner of E. Sierra Madre Ave. and N. Dalton Ave.

We'll ride up Glendora Mountain Road, which is, I understand, still closed to motorized traffic. 5000 feet of climbing in about 25 miles. We'll ride to a small park in Baldy Village, then return through Glendora, where Chuck Schmidt will lead us to lunch at one of his favorite places, and we can check out a legendary LBS in the area, Bud's Bikes.

It's a *really* beautiful ride. If you've done it, you know, if you haven't, you're in for a treat. A challenge, yes, but at a moderate pace the climb is not that hard, and it's VERY scenic.

Forecast is for warm weather, so bring plenty of water, and I do mean PLENTY, because other than a couple of restrooms en-route there is nowhere to water up until Baldy Village.

Please e-mail me if you have questions, or if you're coming, so we know who to expect.

So far we have Chuck Schmidt, Jack Bissell, Brian Baylis (c'mon Brian, you can do it..<g> ) I and Carmen on our Jack Taylor tandem (all that climbing on a tandem, what am I, nuts?)

We'll see you there.
