Dale,

IMHO, most likely 1976 --- based on decal scheme -- Lion emblems were changed to sides of seat tube in 1975 but rings used French national colours that year -- red, white, blue -- and in 1976 returned to international colors as on Dale's bike. I have a PX-10 frame that I believe is a 1975 model and is consistent with this scheme - Lions on side and red white blue rings.

The lugs, paint colour, and 531 emblem in particular, raise some questions, however. The fancy lugs, although as Galen says suggests early '70s, are shown on the PY10 on the cover of the 1976 catalogue, and probably could have been available on PX-10's that year. (Unfortunately, no picture of the 1976 PX-10 is included in the catalogue, and also unfortunately, my 1975(?) frame has only plain lugs.)

Until 1975, my weak recollection is that PX-10's offered a colour selection of white only. By later in the 1970s silver and blue (usually the light power blue) were being offered. Don't remember any red ones until after that; red was usually reserved for the lesser models including the PR-10 and PN-10. Could this be a repaint, with inconsistent decals. Or maybe a PR or PN with black paint added to the head lugs (unlikely, I think, given the fancy lugs.) Maybe some of you guys who sold these new in your shops can comment further on the colour selections.

In the last two weeks on eBay a PR-10 was advertized as a 1960's PX-10 -- the seller was partly confused by the 6 digit frame number since most were 7 digits in the 1970s. But the 1975 decal scheme -- dual Lions on sides with red white blue rings -- gave it away. (BTW, I'm told and my own observations seem to confirm that Peugeot apparently did not have a consistent numbering system. The fact that from sometime around 1969 or 1970 until the late 70s, the serial number was stamped on a loose alloy tag that was (later?) riveted to the bottom bracket may explain the inconsistency. I think the PX-10 website mentions this. Anybody care to chip in with more specific knowledge?)

Added to the confusion, Dale's bike also has a French 531 decal from the '60 and early '70s. What little is left of the French 531 decal on my 1975(?) shows the gold bar across the bottom consistent with the mid-and late 1970's PX-10s in the catalogues.

I'm pretty sure that the PX-10s brakes were Mafac Competition throughout this time period; the Mafac 2000's would seem to have been a later upgrade. Anybody know the date that the 2000's first appeared?

The Stronglight 93 crankset was standard on the PX10 from 1972 to 1976; in 1977 it was replaced by the 105 bis(?) per the catalogues. The Simplex SLJ ders with gold logo plates were on the 1974 and 1975 models; switched to a newer model SLJ in 1977. Thus further reason for my madness in focusing on 1976.

Altogether it seems to be the usual inconsistent set of facts typical of Peugeot bikes. I've looked at a lot of Peugeots since I bot a used Lenton from a friend who used the money as a down payment on a brand new PLX-10 in 1958. And many of you have heard me bemoan the fact that my ex-wife persuaded me to give away a 1956 PLX8 randonneur /tourer some years ago. I've also confirmed my vague recollections by looking at the catalogues as well including those at http://home.wanadoo.nl/peugeotshow/

Please comment, correct or clarify as necessary.
