I think Sheldon Brown has this about right... catalogues and company

printed matter is fair game and hurrah! for those who take the time and effort to collect and, more importantly, share this material with others.

Mark Bulgier in particular.

Most of these companies, even those in still business, have probably trashed their archives long ago and I bet they visit Mark and Dale's site more than you think. I've done consulting work for companies interested in rediscovering their "heritage" and trust me, the past isn't prologue in th e corporate world. It's usually binned and forgotten. Some of the most erronious accounts of a company's past I've ever read came from their own PR dept. I bet the only time Campagnolo gets all nostalgic for their pas t is when they send their lawyers after little bods making replica gum hoods .

I've had entire hunks of my books and articles appear, cut and pasted, int o websites (and indeed books) as well as photos I've taken. Often sans credit. So big deal. I'd rather be flattered by the occasional cheeky "re-use" than spend more than 93 seconds with an lawyer over the matter. No one makes any money on any of this one way or another in such specialised little topics as this.

So as a published author and photographer, my advice is to follow the old adage "Knowledge Is Of No Value Unless Shared With Others".... and scan and post away con gusto.
