Seriously I was told much later that Herse had a exceptional chrome from a simple but very well researched process. It is mentioned in Jan's VBQ I think. Singer is probably similar.
I was attracted to Herse after seeing them mentioned in Eugene Sloane's Complete Book of Bicycling. I saw one owned by I assume the late, great Dan Henry at an LAW rally in Georgia in the early 1980's. He had his purchased in the mid or early 60's that apparently had not be cleaned or cared for in the preceding 20 + years and despite warning that it must have.....rust; HAD NONE. I then thought this is the fellow to Chrome my next bike and so I ordered my Herse in 1983..
I feel environment does play a big part.
Rechoming; I'm sure it was done occationally.
I had a Tandem chromed in Belgium and they claimed the twice was the limit; why, I know not Flemish.
