My mother in law told me Saturday night that her Auntie Mary in England wants me to have her late husband’s bike. The bike in question is a pre WWII Hill Special. I have little info on the bike other than that it is fully chromed and “about” my size according to my father in law, he guesses 24”.

I have not been too successful in finding out much about these bikes. I have already searched the phred archives. I won’t be getting the bike until my father in law next goes to England and can collect it.

I am forty and I have been riding for years. As you may have guessed I have married into a cycling family. I have worked in bike shops, done a bit of racing and currently am the Outreach Coordinator for teh Narragansett Bay Wheelmen in Rhode Island. My most used bike is a two year old Colnago Dream HP but the stable contains a Surly Crosscheck, Bianchi Pista, Bianchi Denali, and a Waterford 2200. My only Semi-classic bike would be my 1987 Paramount. The Hill Special will be my first older bike. I am beyond excited about it.

Auntie Mary has fended off collectors and museums for years and wants me to have the bike because she knows that I’ll ride it. She only let go of their tandem when she found a couple that would ride it. The Hill Special is her last piece of Uncle Eddie and I am tremendously honored that, having never even met me, wants me to have the bike.

I look forward to learning a lot from you all and any leads on Hill Specials will be greatly appreciated.
