Looking at that issue for the hundredth time and I'm suddenly stuck by how perfectly proportioned and arranged the panniers on the cover bicycle appear, right down to the bag dimemsions approximating the "golden rectangle". Very refined asthetically and functionally I think. Contrast that with the rigs on pages 6 & 7, or my touring rig; they work, but the word "refined" doesn't come to mind, certainly not asthetically anyway. Were bags of this sort typical of European touring equipment 30 or 50 years ago? Are they and the proper racks available from anyone in Europe or Japan today?
