Subject: [CR]Schwinn Decals and Cleaning Products

Have begun the rehab of a 1981 Schwinn Le Tour. It is in very good condition, so the dismantle and rebuild has gone well. The paint is very good, but the decals are 'crazed' and appear fragile. The small "le tour" on each side of the top tube was obliterated when I applied the foaming cleaner to remove 6 years of dust. I have used this Tuff Stuff foam cleaner without damage to decals before, but these it removed. I stopped before getting to the main decals.

1. What cleaners are y'all using that will not harm decals (The small le tour decals may have been prone to damage from anything, but I don't know).

2. Does anyone have a source or suggestions for finding original decals for this Schwinn? The down tube and seat tube decals are two color, bone and gold, the small 'le tour' on the top tube is white.

3. If they cannot be replaced, is there a sealer of some kind, short of having the frame clear-coated, that will protect the main decals?

Thanks in advance for any info.
